The following review was written by Eddie Nienhuis on the book Called to Watch for Christ's Return by Martyn McGeown (Jenison, MI: Reformed Free Publishing, 2016). The review was originally published in the April 2025 edition of the Grandville Gleaner.
We live in a world where we can plainly see the increasing wickedness in the world around us. It is imperative that we as Christians retain our focus and proper understanding as the world ripens for judgement, and the imminent return of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. In his book, “Called to Watch for Christ’s Return”, Rev. McGeown lays out a detailed explanation of the biblical teaching of the end times, as it was given by Christ himself in what is known as the Olivet Discourse (Matt. 24-25). Rev. McGeown also gives ample refutation for the false views of eschatology that have arisen in the church world from improper interpretations of this passage and similar passages.
Reading this book is an excellent way to sharpen our focus, and better equip us for our witness, in regards to the ultimate purpose of God and the responsibility of His church as He guides us through history. God’s purpose is His glory, through the magnification of Christ, by the exaltation of His church, which will be finalized when Christ returns.
Many will be the afflictions and trials of God’s children as we await that glorious day of Christ’s return. The church must endure persecution, abounding lawlessness, and increasing apostasy. These things are necessary, and they are used by God for our good. “The teaching of scripture is, first the cross; then the crown. That is true of Christ and that is also true for us. First we suffer; then we are glorified.” (page 157)
We must not fear the end, but rather we must look forward to it with eager anticipation!
Christ came the first time to die for our sins, and he will return to bring us into the fullness of salvation. For this reason, we have nothing to fear, but we rejoice in the knowledge of his return!
Christ gave us instruction about the end times so that we will recognize the signs of his coming and be prepared for what is to come. When we see these signs we should not be alarmed, because all these things must come to pass exactly as Christ has said, and when it is all complete, then he will come. The exact time of his return remains unknown to us because Christ wants us to be ready, always watching and waiting for his return.
In this book, we receive encouragement to seize the opportunities, and positions we hold in our daily lives, to serve God in anticipation of Christ’s return, by being used for the furtherance of the gospel. All we who are members of the church and believe in Jesus Christ are called to serve his kingdom. We must be faithful in all the responsibilities and tasks we have been given until he returns or calls us home.
May we be active in our calling to serve while we watch, and may we pray in earnest, “Come Lord Jesus, come quickly!”
