The following review was written by Tyler K. on the book When You Pray by Herman Hanko (Jenison, MI: Reformed Free Publishing, 2006). The review was originally published in the Grandville Gleaner.
As Christians, we can all agree without a doubt that prayer is an incredibly important aspect of our spiritual lives. However, we must be very careful that prayer does not become something we simply do without thinking. It can be so easy for us to simply rattle off a few of the same petitions that we always use before we go to bed at night or when we sit down to eat a meal. "When You Pray" is a fantastic reminder to us about how we must be very active in our prayer lives, and not let it become something that we simply do because we feel like we have to.
Hanko starts this book off in the best way possible. The beginning of this book is all about how crucial prayer is to the life of a child of God. Hanko wastes no time emphasizing the great importance of prayer. In the first line of chapter 1 he states, "Prayer is to the Christian what breathing is to a healthy person". What a striking way to start this book! How can a person even begin to live their life if they cannot breathe the air that God has given us? In the same way how can a child of God even have a small beginning of a good relationship of servitude to God, if we do not pray the words that God has allowed us to pray to him?
The second section of this book focuses on how we go to God in prayer, specifically the attitude that we have when we pray. This section of the book is very practical to us as Christians, as we often need to be reminded of the importance of reverence in prayer. Sometimes we can forget that we are approaching the all knowing, all powerful, creator of the universe! In these few chapters, Hanko does a great job showing how we pray with reverence. He specifically mentions things such as our posture, attitude, language, and even the benefits of praying out loud over to ourselves in our heads. Hanko expresses the importance of having humility when we pray, as we are often bringing to God our sins that are weighing us down. In this he references the beautiful words of Matthew 11:28, "Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."
This is just a small beginning of the incredible amount of information, biblical commands, and advice that is laid out in this book by Prof. Hanko. I personally have benefited greatly from the reading of this book, and I strongly feel that any fellow believer who reads this book and applies the information to their lives will see noticeable improvements in their life of prayer.
