A lively, warm explanation and development of the glorious gospel of salvation by the grace of God in Jesus Christ. Kuyper is fresh. Kuyper is fervent. Kuyper storms the heart of the believer.
Originally published in Dutch at the end of the nineteenth century, this explanation and development of the gospel of salvation by the grace of God in Jesus Christ was controversial then and continues to be so today.
"Reformed believers will surely be impressed with the power of the author's language and argument, the breadth of this acquaintance with past and contemporary discussion, and the cumulative weight of his case. They will also find Kuyper surprisingly fresh and pointed. Many contemporary denials of particular grace are anticipated by his arguments." — Mid-America Journal of Theology

This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. — 1 John 5:7
"Light ... is the absolute contrast to darkness. When Scripture says that God is light and that in Him is no darkness whatever, that does not merely refer to God’s absolute self-consciousness, but to the full, pure, holy, divine life in all its significance. It also means that God is truth and there is absolutely no lie in Him; that He is righteousness and there is absolutely no unrighteousness in Him; that God is love and there is absolutely no hatred in Him (also God’s hatred is love, even as love apart from God is hatred); that He is holiness, purity, faithfulness, veracity, and goodness and that in Him is absolutely no unholiness or impurity, no unfaithfulness or wickedness, no lie, no hatred or envy, no unrighteousness or impurity. That is all from the devil, who therefore is called the prince of darkness, the king who rules in the realm of darkness. But to the light belong love, truth, holiness, and purity. All this is in God. According to His essence, He is Light. It is not as if it can be said of Him that He loves and possesses righteousness, holiness, and the like, but He is, according to His essence, love, holiness, truth, and all that is good. And because He is this according to His essence, He lives as triune God an eternal, perfect light-life, a life of divinely perfect love, truth, holiness, and spotless purity.
Now the Word is the perfect reflection of that light-life. Through Him that light also shines externally. And through Him, that light becomes the light of the creature who is created according to His image, and is therefore inclined in a creaturely measure to live the life of God and have fellowship with Him. If we also live in love, truth, righteousness, and holiness, that is only because we have fellowship with Him. Then we walk in the light and also have fellowship with one another."
