The Voice of Our Fathers is the most extensive commentary in English on the Canons of Dordrecht (1618–19). 

 

Positively, the Canons state and explain thoroughly and carefully the doctrines of grace on the basis of Scripture. Negatively, they defend these doctrines by exposing and rejecting errors that contradict and militate against the teaching of Scripture. 

 

The author treats the text of the Canons article by article, clarifying the translation where necessary and explaining both the positive teaching and the rejection of errors. Moreover, the volume also contains historical sections and documents that help to clarify both the history and the issues involved in the meeting and work of the Synod of Dordt. 

 

The Voice of Our Fathers can either be used as a resource to be consulted when required, or it can be read from cover to cover. Either way, the reader will gain a better understanding of God’s sovereignty is salvation as expounded in the Canons of Dordt.

Homer C. Hoeksema (1923-1989) served as a minister in the Protestant Reformed Churches (149-1955), and then as a professor at the Protestant Reformed Theological Seminary (1959-1989). He is also the author of Redeemed with Judgment: Sermons on Isaiah, in two volumes.

Voice of Our Fathers

Though I had read on this subject before, I was struck by the treachery of the Arminius camp in refusing to detail their beliefs prior to any Synod and in seeking to change the church standards by stealth. I was also struck by the faithfulness of the church of the day in adhering to the truth of Calvinism against such opposition. What I was disappointed about the book, is that it does not contain the entire Synod of Dordrecht deliberations. It is fine so far as it goes, but where is the material the PRC base their keeping of Easter and Christmas that their office bearers swear to uphold? Perhaps you could direct me to a publication of the entire document. I would be very interested in this! Good work though. Your publications are very valuable to me and I use them extensively in our congregation and at home.

The magazine began to publish editorials that indicated a change of direction. It appeared to identify more with liberal trends rather than holding its ground as the conservative banner bearer it had been for many years. That put me on a search for a publication that was thoroughly Reformed and unlikely to weaken as many of the once faithful are now doing. That was when I discovered The Standard Bearer. I didn’t know the publication existed until recently but I have had a number of Herman Hoeksema books in my library for many years now and have turned to them frequently as they have always been a valuable source of reliable information. I’m glad I found The Standard Bearer and I plan on being a subscriber for many years to come!

Can't Keep it on the Shelf
I keep giving copies away. Excellent factual summaries of so many heroes of the faith over the many centuries. I notice Monergism.com uses the summaries for some of their book reprints. Vermigli for example. This is more of a why don't you have a copy type of review. H. Hanko follows the Gospel...I keep giving copies away. I had recently finished a deep dive into the letter to the Romans when I happened across this title. I purchased it and it has provided insight and perspective to portions I had read many times. When I am tempted to lose my temper or think of or speak unkindly to someone, I hear in my mind, "Reckon yourself dead to sin but alive unto God." The devotional style of this commentary has been so helpful in applying these great truths to my every day living. I am grateful to have come across this book.
