Still working through the commentary, however Engelsma is a refreshing take. He's not ashamed of the language the confession uses. Highly recomend this resource to anyone seeking to better understand the Belgic.
David Engelsma has written a commentary on this confession making it as relevant today, possibly more so, as when it was written in 1561 and adopted by the Reformed churches in 1619-19. The confession itself includes simple yet profound statements of a broad range of essential doctrines. An example of how Engelsma brings this confession to life for the contemporary reader will suffice. Article 3 of the Confession establishes the Bible as the written word of God. In confronting attacks on this basic truth, Engelsma states that, "all criticism of scripture, even the mildest, is unbelief that will not stop ... until all the doctrines of scripture ... are denied." He goes on to demonstrate this fact with the assaults on the Biblical truths concerning creation and marriage. Engelsma's commentary on the Belgic Confession adds context to a confession that is as important today as it was in the 16th century.
