This collection of short biographies details the lives of fifty-two professing believers who lived and died for Christ. Read about old favorites, such as Augustine and Luther, and learn about the obscure, though equally influential Christians, such as Cocceius and Olevianus. Not sentimental or fictionalized, these accounts tell what Christians actually said and did during difficult times, and they prepare the reader to face opposition today.

What others are saying about the book:

"While Portraits of Faithful Saints may not make the official textbook lists in some seminaries, students are going to latch on to Hanko's latest as an indispensable cheatsheet on the biography of theologians—the Halley's Handbook of its field." —Christian Observer

"Young People! Buy this book and read it! It is not difficult to read. In fact, since the chapters were originally magazine articles, each chapter can be read independently as part of your devotions, a feature which allows one to read a chapter at a time without losing the thought of the book. It has been carefully detailed and prepared by the Reformed Free Publishing Association." - Mike Feenstra

Can't Keep it on the Shelf

I keep giving copies away. Excellent factual summaries of so many heroes of the faith over the many centuries. I notice Monergism.com uses the summaries for some of their book reprints. Vermigli for example. This is more of a why don't you have a copy type of review. H. Hanko follows the Gospel through God's servants through the ages. Get the book, nice short chapters - great to pick up and read anytime.

Easy read in that it contains multiple short biographies!

Are you looking for some light Reformed reading? Look no further. This book is an easy read in that it contains multiple short biographies. It is also unashamedly Reformed, evaluating all characters from a Reformed perspective. Containing the biographies of some of the most influential saints of the past 2 millennia, this book is a beautiful, touching, stirring testimony, not to the great faith of men, but to the great faithfulness of God to His people, in preserving them through countless dangers and trials, and in never ceasing to uphold them with His grace and granting them the faith they need to persevere. We read here of some of the earliest martyrs, the great St Augustine, of some saints from the Middle Ages (about one of which I am not convinced he really was a saint), of the great Reformers and of some of the great leaders of the Reformed faith of our times. In all these accounts we are encouraged and exhorted to live godly lives and rejoice in persecution, we are ashamed of our own weakness and fear of man, and above all are overcome with a sense of the goodness of God in preserving His church and in taking weak, foolish, sinful men and turning them into trophies of grace "of whom the world was not worthy". Highly recommended!
